Faced
with the realities of rising costs and outdated facilities,
the Board of Trustees of Friars Club recommended to the
Franciscan Friars (the Membership of the Corporation) that the
building at 65 West McMillan be closed. The
fortress-like facility, a neighborhood landmark, is best known
for a youth sports program that serves more than 300
youngsters in grades K-8. The youth sports program
which has always been the mainstay at Friars Club will
continue and be conducted in temporary facilities.
The
Friars Board in agreement with our Franciscan sponsors, the
Province of Saint John the Baptist, voted to create a
Facilities Steering Committee to lead the effort to design and
seek funding for a new Friars Club.
The
new facility will be the third location in the 146-year
history of the organization.
The
Friars Club primarily serves disadvantaged youth located in
multiple urban communities in Cincinnati and will physically
remain in the community we serve. We recognize that access and
security will impact our choice of locations and are critical
to our success. Two locations for the new facility are under
consideration. Each location offers certain advantages. Both
would be convenient to much of the Greater Cincinnati
community.
The
new Friars Club will have a self-sustaining business model.
Friars leagues, camps and tournaments will provide the
revenue to scholarship the financially challenged. Multiple
examples of similar facilities are in operation in our
community and others.
