Programs
Friars Club Youth Development and Community Service Programs work with boys and girls ages 5 through 17, through its various programs to help them develop personal goals and successful lives emphasizing the values of respect, responsibility, leadership and good sportsmanship while promoting community service and volunteerism.
CISE
Friars CISE (Catholic Inner City Schools Education) Sports Program
- Friars through the support of the Dater Foundation, organizes afterschool sports teams for boys and girls grades K-8 at St. Francis School (Over the Rhine), St. Joseph School (West Inn), Corryville Catholic School (Corryville), St. Boniface School (Northside) and Resurrection School (Price Hill). The sports include basketball, volleyball and baseball.
- This program mentors eighth grade and high school students to work with the younger children as volunteers in the program and then as coaches (leaders) of the younger teams (Grades K-2)
- There were 16 teams (160 kids) organized during the 2007-2008 school year and approximately ten volunteer coaches
Ron Walker Youth Sports Winter Basketball Program and Bantam League
- Friars organize basketball teams for boys and girls in the second through eighth grades to play organized games and teach them the fundamentals through adult volunteers. The teams are designed to be diverse and are comprised of kids from varied socio-economic backgrounds. The program sponsors fifteen to twenty teams (150-200 kids).
- This program also organizes a basketball league for boys and girls in second and third grade. This league is run for the kids on the Friars organized teams and other outisde organized teams. The league usually involves sixteen to twenty teams (160-200 kids).
Ron Walker Youth Sports Friars Kindergarten and First Grade Teen Leadership Program
- Friars organizes basketball teams for boys and girls in Kindergarten and First Grade to be coached and led by teenage volunteers whom are trained and mentored to be coaches through adult volunteers and staff. Good coaching skills help to promote good leadership skills.
- The Kindergarten and First Grade teams usually involve eight to ten teams (80-100 kids) being organized and taught the fundamentals of the game through a fun learning environment.
Ron Walker Youth Sports Baseball Program
Friars organize boy's baseball teams through support of the Reds Community Fund.
- The program had six teams (72-90 kids) playing organized baseball on t-ball up through B ball teams through Cincinnati Knothole Baseball
- The teams are coached by adult volunteers
Ron Walker Youth Sports AAU Basketball Program
- Friars support several AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball teams. These are teams of the highest level of play. The number of teams varies from year to year, depending on the kids, coaches and commitment to the level of play, cost and travel. These teams train to compete at the state basketball tournament and then travel to the National Tournament. Team sponsorship is approximately $12,000.00.
- Friars sponsored four teams in 2007 and two in 2008. Teams have traditionally won state tournaments and finished in the top 12 nationally.
- Teams participate in fundraisers to help cover their expenses.
Ron Walker Youth Sports Summer Basketball Leagues
- Friars sponsor a summer basketball league for boys and girls in grades two through six.
- The league is coached by adult volunteers who coach the kids at practice once a week and coach them in games once a week.
- The league involves four to eight teams (40-80 kids).
- Summer leagues are designed for continued game play during basketball off season.
